Alex Evans
Alex J. Evans is a Mancunian freelance illustrator and artist. He has been selling his work since his late teens. After graduating in illustration at MMU he moved to London to work as an animation storyboard artist in Soho. Regardless of where he is he constantly makes visual notes in anyway he can. Each day he makes thumbnail sketches or takes photographs, or both. With this ever-growing archive of reference material he aims to make visually impactful, impressionistic work with good layout and good colour, using a variety of traditional materials and modern techniques. He says that his art is about looking for its own sake, ‘...In my urban drawings and prints I’m trying to convey a sense of spontaneity and energy without losing a sense of place. My location drawings form a personal and primitive map of where I’ve been.’

Janet Griffiths
Janet Griffiths studied on the MA in Fine Art at Manchester Metropolitan University from 1999 to 2001. Since that time she has been exhibiting in group shows, magazines and video screenings in the UK, Europe and America. She has work in Private Collections in the UK. Her work is about a woman she has created who lives in her house: her alter ego, a universal housewife who is a metaphor for all women who have found themselves trapped in their domestic circumstances for different reasons. To make her mundane life more bearable she creates fantasies in short video pieces or in constructed photoworks. Ideas for these come from autobiographical starting points, the media, myths and fairytales. Inherent in her work is the element of chance and accidental happenings and above all else, humour. John Hamilton
John’s work depicts figures in various disguises or costumes. They centre around figures in (mis) adventurous situations. There is a continuous theme of role-play, with a theatrical element. They are sometimes story-based, and always told with a touch of humour and a sense of loyalty.
John compares the work to stills from a play or a film. A snap shot from a photograph album. A captured moment. What has happened before it or what happens next, only the viewer knows.
Some of the characters appear mysterious and sinister, while others appear to be relaxed and at ease, but it is not always easy to tell which is which.
John has exhibited widely across the UK, as well as in shows in Australia, and in the USA. He has work in private collections in Germany, America, Australia and in the UK.
Most of Johns work is on oil and canvas, which vary in size from 12" sq to 6ft x 5ft. As well as oils John works in acrylics, mixed media and small 3D pieces. Drawing also plays an important part in his work. They include working in sketchbooks to large-scale charcoal drawings and mixed media collages.

Catrin Mostyn Jones
Catrin Mostyn Jones' work is inspired by exploring creatures of the sea and images of the human body at a microscopic level. Examining the complex and colourful images derived from these studies has given Catrin the stimulus to develop and
explore differing combinations of form and colour.
Catrin's vivid jewellery collection of hard built and press moulded sculptural forms are brought to life by the additions of growths using coils and textures. What really brings the work alive though is her glazing, through a wide range of earthenware glazes applied by spraying multiple layers sometimes using a wax resist. Carl Lindley
Have you ever been caught in the dark? How did it feel? Were your eyes searching for a light? Did your hands reach out in space?
As an artist, Carl is fascinated by the ambiguous nature of life, from the moment of a physical experience through its many interpretations. The human curiosity for meaning, from the act of story telling has constantly fuelled his artistic intentions for art production.
The piece of art on display along with other works by the artist have their basis around the manifestation of an alter ego, A.A. Anonymous and the universe it which it functions. How it survives, what it goals are, how this being responds to the ambiguous nature of life are realized through the artwork on show.

Gareth Morgan
Gareth Morgan's work tells stories, whether a whole story, as in my comic strips, or a glimpse of a narrative, as in one of his paintings. Questions are left unanswered so the story can continue in the mind of the viewer.
The theme of the work tends to be alienation or loneliness, and the fantasy this breeds.
My most recent work uses the mask as a theme. The characters in these paintings wear homemade masks, and crude cardboard and parcel tape bodies, as if to inhabit a kind of imaginary space whilst in the safety of their own home. Behind closed doors.
The style of Gareth's work is deliberately simple and unexpressive. The emotional power of each piece comes through in the story being told rather than through its style. View prints for sale from this artist »

Jane Morley
Jane Morley’s work is informed by modernist inspired design - its use in gardens/out door spaces & its association with creating a statement of luxury and style. Initially starting out studying Textile Design she graduated with BA Hons in Fine Art and has exhibited throughout the North West of England. Her work demonstrates elements of flat texture as well as strong formal qualities and makes reference to her enduring interest in how gardens and garden design have been portrayed in painting from suburban lawns to the great estates. Coupled with this is the influence of the many lifestyle magazines & television programmes. How we are seduced with aspirations of creating our own design statement or sanctuary to escape to. Essentially a landscape painter her work is very much influenced by growing up and living in a post-industrial regenerated city like Manchester. View prints for sale from this artist »

Patrick Murphy
The work of South Yorkshire based artist Patrick Murphy is
multi-faceted, ranging through painting, sculpture/3D and digital media.
Much of his work is concerned with creating a dialogue with our
surroundings and each other. Using familiar objects and themes he
depicts the world around us, altering the original context of subjects
so they appear simultaneously both familiar and unfamiliar, encouraging
or stimulating a sense of questioning from the viewer. His paintings,
digital prints and commissioned work has been included in a wide range
of exhibitions and features in private and corporate collections in the U.K
His digital work is primarily concerned with manipulating the use of
digital technology in the creation of new forms and scenes that cannot
be achieved by painting. A direct comparison can be made with
conventional mark making, but in this instance all forms are created
inside the lens of the camera using a direct light source.

Martin Nash
Martin has lived in places as diverse as West Africa, Ireland, Germany ,Malaya and Norway. The rich and varied experiences of his travels have in many direct and subtle ways influenced Martin's development as an artist.
In 1978 , having first studied Architecture and Foundation Arts, Martin completed a Degree in Printed and Woven Textiles at Manchester. This grounding in Architecture and Textiles, both arts which have a practical application and deal with the flat surface as well as 3 dimensional space and form, has informed the evolution of Martin's work. As well as exhibiting his work in London and across the North West Martin has completed Public Sculpture Commissions and produced pieces for Corporate Collections.
Of his recent work Martin says: "My painting, which has become increasingly more abstract, is concerned with exploring … colour, mark making, pattern and that elusive and mysterious quality that makes a good painting. In my most recent sculptural work the painted surface has become the raw material for the three dimensional form. …I think there will always be a decorative element in my work, in as much as I want to excite the eye as much as stimulate the mind."

Gavin Parry
Gavin Parry has worked with Comme Ca Art on several exhibitions of his students’ works from the Manchester Metropolitan University Photography Degree course.
Gavin's first exhibition with Comme Ca titled 'Soulmates' are photographs of found or second-hand objects, bought from car boot sales or charity shops. All these objects are used, bearing the trace of their histories through the patina of wear and tear.
Some of the objects are paired up and photographed with another object. Photographic unions that test out the myth of the soulmate: the quest for two disparate and separate entities to (re)discover each other so that they become one, reunited with their other true half.
Other objects are photographed alone, as though waiting for their destiny to unfold around them, a destiny that may or may not have already happened...

Niall O Shea
Hailing from Ireland, Niall O'Shea is a Manchester-based photographer. Shooting digital and self-taught, Niall has been commissioned for features in national dailies and travel magazines and his work is held in private collections in the UK and North America. Technically, his work bears the hallmarks of modern photojournalism: a keen eye for dramatic composition, bold colour and exquisite timing. He departs from photojournalism where his urban 'snapshots' teeter on the verge of unreality. These photos dive into the gritty glamour of urban life, capturing subjects in their milieu in scenes that are enchanting, threatening and incongruous by turns - reflecting the psychological intensity of the metropolis dweller View prints for sale from this artist »

Dominic Thomas
Having spent the last decade pitting his trade in the murky music and fashion industries, Mancunian artist Dominic Thomas has amassed an impressive international clientel. From his seminal sleeve designs for Badly Drawn Boy and Kings of Convenience, art direction with Flux Magazine, to more commercial ad campaigns for Adidas and Levis, there have been many twists and turns in his style and production techniques. He has a continuous forward-thinking approach to design and is unafraid to express himself through various media. This has seen his career mutate through photography, illustration and graphic design, never allowing himself to settle into one set discipline.
One highlight in recent years was the production of a series of collaborative works with his hero - Polish design legend Andrzej Klimowski, with whom he teamed up with to produce exquisite record sleeves and magazine covers. Throughout his career his personal works such as 'The Four Branches' and 'Golden Windows' have been exhibited to critical acclaim in London, New York and Manchester. As an ardent fan of disparate mid-nineteenth century art movements and progressive underground music he manages to juggle these passions on a daily basis running his twin record labels 'Twisted Nerve' and 'Finders Keepers', producing collectable house style sleeves and music in conjuction with label partner and long term friend Andy Votel under the guise 'The Liars'.
His latest works are thought provoking experimental photographic colourscapes - relating to certain moods and ideas that delve into memories of childhood and unusual life experiences through to music. These pieces are traditionally shot and do not use any computer manipulation. Captured instinctively through the use of a mirrored fabric, each piece creates its own universe of shapes and aesthetics, inviting the viewer to make their own personal interpretaion.

SUN Special Edition 2008
The special edition prints, selected by the curators of the exhibition - Claire Turner from Comme Ça Art in Manchester and Sam Knowles from Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory - present a diverse range of captured moments that are at times funny, soulful and inspirational. Claire Turner commented:
“There are some fantastic photographic images widely available nowadays from retailers like Habitat and Ikea but this is the only place where you can pick up original, often personal work by professional, commercial photographers that is rarely displayed publicly, let alone available to take home. It’s exciting to have the exclusive opportunity of exhibiting such a diverse range of images all together, showing the different ways photographers have of looking at the world.”
All the prints are printed onto paper sized 72x60cm. The images sizes are smaller but the white border has a printed signature of each photographer.
All the works displayed on our shop are now being exhibited at Matt and Phreds Jazz Club, 64 Tib Street, Manchester, M4 1LW.
The club is open from 5pm Monday - Saturday. View prints for sale from this artist »
